Seeking Santa - Quiltmas 2022 Quilt Block

Seeking Santa quilt block

It’s that time of year again where we all cheer for Quiltmas! 12 Quiltmas Elves have been busy in their workshops to produce 12 FREE* festive quilt blocks. As one of the Quiltmas 2022 elves I am really excited to bring to you ‘Seeking Santa’ - a fun modern quilt block where Santa is lost between the trees - can you see him anywhere?

*All 12 Quiltmas blocks available for free up until the 31st December 2022

The Seeking Santa pattern walks you through how to make 3 different mini blocks that when combined make up the finished block. Don’t be intimidated by Santa’s little white beard - I have included video tutorials to walk you through how to make each part to go along side the pattern so that anyone can give it a go and enjoy some festive sewing.

AGF Pure Solids

Quiltmas 2022 is sponsored by Art Gallery Pure Solids. Each block the elves made the year used the Pure Solid range.

For my Seeking Santa block I used; Flamingo, Mirage Blue, Evergreen and White Linen.

Use page 8 and 9 of the pattern to help plan out your fabric choices or use the free digital colouring-in page at Pre Quilt here!

Making the Seeking Santa Block

The pattern is broken into 3 sections, each section walks you through how to make each ‘mini block’. Block A is the most straight forward block, making half-square-triangles (HSTs) to form the first set of trees. If you are new to HSTs, watch the video below which quickly walks you through how to make them.

Making Block B may seem a little tricky if you are new to quilting. You will need a quilting ruler with a 60 degree line. This line is used to produce the correct angle of the triangle which makes the tree. Watch the video below for a quick step by step tutorial on how it is done along side following the instructions in the Seeking Santa pattern.

Making Santa Block C is the trickiest of all 3 mini blocks. You can make an extra Block B in a contrasting colour if you wish instead to make the process a little easier.

If you are up to the challenge of making Santa with his beard follow the steps on page 5 and 6 of the pattern and use the video tutorial below for extra help. My biggest tip is to not to worry about the blocks being perfect and enjoy the process.

i hAVE AMENDED THE PATTERN AND added an extra section to make santa using a fpp method!

After I released my pattern on Day 9 of #quiltmasspectacular 2022, I could see too many people struggling with making Santa - so I have turned him into a FPP pattern as an added extra - so you now have the choice of how to make him! And if FPP is a new to you, I have made a quick video tutorial that you can follow along.

(If it is not in your pattern, re-download the pattern from the link in the Quiltmas Spectacular email and print page 7)

Seeking Santa Block Bonus!

Turn your Seeking Santa mini quilt blocks into coasters!

It’s easy to do! Just take any of the mini blocks, make a quilt sandwich (backing, wadding and one of the mini blocks from the Seeking Santa pattern for the top) and have fun quilting them! I used a range of Aurifil threads and used my walking foot on my Janome machine to produce more detail with the quilting. I even added a few stars on my Santa block using a decorative stitch on my Janome M7 machine.

Once you have quilted you coaster, apply 1.5inch binding strip to the edge with your desired method, as you would with a full size quilt.

I hope you enjoy all the patterns from Quiltmas 2022.
