Mini Heart Quilt Block
It’s that time of year again where everywhere you look there will be hearts filling every post on Instagram! So in my pursuit to try and be different I thought I would make my husband a valentines card - which got me thinking about the simple Heart Quilt Block……… but smaller!
My eldest daughter requested a specific memory quilt a few years ago - a heart memory quilt! She didn't want squares, she wanted hearts! This gave me a good base to start from - I had already mastered my ideal heart block, I just needed to shrink it down!
So that is just what I did, I resized, tweaked and changed the heart block from Lucy’s heart memory quilt all those years ago and made it small enough to fit on front of a card, to make a valentines card.
I even decided to add some quilted stitches to the heart too. I basted it with left over batting and bit of off cut fabric for the back (this piece of fabric is not necessary but I do like how it makes the quilting pop out more!)
There is something really therapeutic about slowing down and enjoying a craft on a smaller scale. Making these Mini Heart Blocks has done just that. I experimented and hand quilted around one heart and machine quilted with my favourite Aurifil thread around another.
Depending on what you intend to do with your finished mini-quilt block, you can always add a border. I had a ‘window brown gift card’ that I needed the block to be larger to fit in it neatly, so added extra backing fabric to the edges.
The other style of Valentines card that I made were plain brown paper greeting cards. I simple used a bit of fabric glue on the back of the quilted heart block and stuck it straight on to the front of the card. I finished it off with stamping ‘Love You’ underneath the heart using a fabric stamper I had for labelling the kids school clothes!
If you have subscribed to the newsletter and downloaded the mini-heart block pattern, you may of already noticed that there are ow options for the size of the block. A mini size (used on the greeting cards shown above) but also a larger block, 6″ x 5″.
This block size is more like a traditional block size and can be easily used to make a full sized quilt - so I couldn’t resist making a few mock ups of a potential quilt using these blocks in Pre-quilt.
This is mock up of a quilt top using the 6″ x 5″ heart blocks from the free downlaod and 6″ x 5″ squares in-between the heart blocks.
The fabric (colours) used are Kona Cotton in:
Windsor
Breakers
Ochre
Foxglove
Natural (background)
Oyster (edge)
But a quilt is not the only thing you could make with this heart block. you can use just the four colours and make a pillow! I love this simple design and these colours, I think it would look really lovely in a kids bedroom!
There are so many things you can make with a quilted heart block - especially with the two sizes and I would love to see what you make so please tag me on Instagram @madejustsew and use the hashtag #mjsminiheart.
Thank you for reading and happy Valentines!
